Cornwall Waste Action (CWA) is a key Community Waste Sector organisation in Cornwall, with experience of managing a number of waste related projects in the county. CWA works with a range of organisations throughout the county to promote and encourage waste reduction practices and the sustainable use of resources. CWA is at the planning stage of an exciting new beach cleaning project which will help to improve the local environment in Cornwall.                                                                   
The project will involve local communities in beach cleans around Cornwall. Working in partnership, the project will create 10 Taskforces, each of which will focus on a local beach and surrounding area in Cornwall. Project aims are to:

1. Put in place a regular beach cleaning programme for 10 beaches over a 3 year period

2. Theme each beach clean so that participants also have the opportunity to learn about the surrounding area or simply enjoy a leisure activity; for example coastal walks/litter picks, bird-watching, wildflower identification, mining heritage (where appropriate), geology, marine life, sand sculptures, beach games.

3. Provide further opportunities to visit other natural attractions within the county which also have an educational and/or leisure value.

4. Run a poster and information campaign to raise awareness. Provide talks to schools and community groups about the threats that beach litter poses and associated issues. 

5. Conduct surveys to identify types and quantities of litter left on beaches. At the end of the project there will be prizes awarded to participants/groups for cleanest beach and most improved beach in the project.

6.Recruit co-ordinators/mentors from local communities for each Taskforce. 

7.Provide "environmental awareness and action" training courses for Taskforce mentors and other volunteers.

As part of the development process Cornwall Waste Action are asking for groups to register their interest in the project so they can be ready to run with the project if successful with their funding bid.
