Cohousing is a form of intentional community where individuals and families have their own self-contained living accommodation but also have access to many shared facilities as well. It was pioneered in Denmark and the USA more than 20 years ago but is only just getting established in Britain. The UK Cohousing Network is the focus of the movement within this country.
Since 1989 Diggers & Dreamers has been the "public face" of communal living in Britain. Its online directory now lists groups who live in benders in the woods; in monasteries; in big old country houses; and in newbuild low energy developments. The south west is fairly well represented in the online directory and there are a handful of places in Cornwall ... but sadly none, as yet, in Penwith. A major part of communal living has always been the opportunity it provides to live on less with less and to do so in a context that can be much friendlier than living in a little box on a housing estate. Diggers & Dreamers latest printed publication focuses on the theme of cohousing and is intended to be an inspirational guide.
